"Better Half" was created for the ImageOut Art Show - which called for entries that respond to the issues surrounding marriage equality. The show, entitled “I do!?” aims to represent the diversity and weight behind the word “marriage” addressing multiple points of view. The artist prefers to have a portrait speak for itself and allow viewers to find their own interpretation of the drawing. This can be seen as a wedding portrait, a social commentary, and an artistic experience. This thought-provoking image depicts a child resting in a basket, wrapped in fabric and held securely by rope. The message remains for the viewer to interpret – does this piece inspire a sense of security or entrapment does it remind you of the warm safety of a childhood home or the oppression of youth. Every portrait, animal or human, incorporates a sense of the sitter’s individual personality. With an emphasis on graphite and colored pencils, the artist’s classical style focuses on texture, character, and precision. The original drawing, “Resting” was donated to the silent auction, hosted by the Nazareth College Nursing Club & Rochester Birth Area Network.
